Just the other day I go to Harvey’s and order a burger and a cup of water. The cashier lady gives me a cup and I assume I can just fill it at the fountain. The fountain however had no water tap so I asked her to fill it up at her sink. She offered me to just fill it up with soda and was kind of surprised that I wasn’t just trying to save a buck. This reminded me of a time a couple of months ago where I asked if they had any deals for two combos, and employee went along with the order but kept mentioning that I had a coupon. I kept telling him that I didn’t have a coupon and didn’t realize that he was trying to save me some bucks. Harvey’s employees are real asf. Did you know Harvey’s started in Richmond Hill? via /r/ontario https://ift.tt/3FjbNS1

Context: I got a job recently and was asked to embed with another in-house team for a few weeks until my team came back from vacation/parental leave. There isn’t another dedicated frontend engineer on this team but several generalist engineers with limited front end experience. One engineer in particular who seems relatively junior (full disclosure, I have ~6 YOE), works primarily on front end. When I joined the team, I noticed a number of issues throughout the codebase but no serious showstoppers. During code review (and via some git blame investigations), I noticed the majority of these problems came from this junior engineer, so I paid a bit closer attention to their PRs when doing code review. As a general rule, I try to keep my review comments concise and focused on the code, not the person and try to add positive comments as well when I think something was designed or implemented well.I noticed this dev had a habit of “running out the clock” on their work. They would ship something within a reasonable timeframe and move onto the next ticket before getting approval on the first ticket. Then they would apply pressure in stand up to just “ship it” since “it works fine.” Often, I had to just approve things to get it out the door. Previously, the other engineers would just rubber stamp all front end PRs.Examples of critique (tweaked to omit details)”This internal component is redefined on each render. Doesn’t look like it has any dependencies on the outer scope so it can moved out entirely.””Add a role and aria label for these icons so they can be read by screen readers””This test contains a lot of implementation detail. It’s a lot simpler to assert that the button text matches what we expect when the number of the items in the cart is greater than 10. Otherwise, this test will break whenever we refactor unrelated logic. Also, let’s add an integration test so we can be sure that clicking on the button will generate the checkout modal.””string | any will always evaluate to any, so we’re losing type safety here. Is this an intentional change?””This component is calling the api endpoint directly. Let’s create a new method on the client and add this logic so we can call it in a more generic way like client.getUserPreferences()”At the end of my stay, I participated in an “unofficial” review and was surprised to receive negative feedback from said developer citing these comments. This negative feedback stated I was too nitpicky and micromanaged their work, which frustrated them because they expended more effort and time refactoring than they did writing code, which lead to a delay in completing their tickets. The team lead asked how I could improve my technical communication moving forward but I was at a loss to explain how, given that I thought these comments weren’t out of line.I’m not sure what I did wrong here. I think my comments are being mischaracterized and my reviews were valid. Almost all of these comments would only require some minor changes? via /r/Frontend https://ift.tt/3kDANf5

I just had to make a rant about this, because I am so utterly tired of employers talking about passion. It’s like it’s a special thing in this industry, that developers are supposed to have all the time. It’s the subtle expectatation that you will work overtime whenever they want, that you are so interested in coding that you just wanna work 12 hours a day. And when you get off work, you wanna code some more. It’s also the worst excuse in the world for an employer to implant an sick mentality in the minds of their employees, making them feel coeerced to not going home when their shift is technically over.If I hear one more potential employer asking me if I’m passionate at a job interview I might throw up.Yes I’m passionate, passionate enough to come in when I need to work and to leave when my shift is over. And hey once in a while if you ask nicely and it’s really needed I might do some overtime. That’s the extent of my passion.I once had an employer (for a job I turned down) tell me that he was looking for someone with passion, he elaborated on what that meant. It meant someone who didn’t just leave when their shift is over (basically guilt tripping me in advance if I didn’t wanna work more than my contract says). So are you a passionate developer? Or are you tired of being expected to be “passionate”?I’m tired of people talking about passion in this industry. via /r/webdev https://ift.tt/3otDAsj

Hey all,Just wondering if anyone else has any experience this way. I have been developing an addiction to audiobooks over the last couple of years. I listen pretty much all day every day with an AirPod in one ear. Wheel of time, Any Sanderson, Stephen King, Fantasy Epics. I’m a security system technician and I generally work alone. I know that I use audiobooks as an escape. They allow me to escape my general reality and my reality induced depression. I’m trying to dial back as I’m only really ever half aware when listening and my wife and kids need me to be present. But the feelings I get when I can’t listen or when I finish a series and have no logical next listen are of absolute desperation. I feel nauseous until I know that I have my next book selected. Even if I’m not listening to it that minute I know that I can if I want to. The audible plus catalog has been an incredibly assuring service for this since implemented. But I can’t live in unreality and it’s so hard to get out.Anybody else at this level? Am I alone? Ugh. via /r/audiobooks https://ift.tt/3qOCASv

I moved to a new apartment in downtown Toronto last November to take advantage of the Covid price decrease. Rent is ~$2000/month. Now my landlord wants to increase the rent to ~$2500/month for this year because that is current market price. The apartment is rent controlled so I told him its against the Toronto tenancy guidelines to hike the price $500 with no advance notice. The actual amount it can be increased is 1.2%, and that only after the rent freeze ends in January. And I will require 90 days written notice, as per the guidelines.I shared my story with friends and they had similar stories of landlords trying to hike rent after ‘special covid discount’ prices. I find the number of landlords who are either unaware or breaking the tenancy guidelines deeply troubling. via /r/ontario https://ift.tt/3kyKkUm
