tl;Dr – book was fucked in the best way possible. Subverts expectations without sacrificing anything important.Okay so a couple of things to mention before I rant. 1, I have no book friends for the most part – at least none who’ve read this. And 2, read the book first and I’ll probably check out the mini series eventually but fuck man, I need a breather.This is the first novel I’ve read from Gillian Flynn. I loved Gone Girl – the film – and thought it was really cool how she Flynn also wrote the screenplay for the movie adaptation of the book she wrote. Because of my enjoyment of the film, I bought the book but have yet to read it. I have that issue that I’d imagine a lot of us have and just buy a bunch of books and they just set dormant ok a shelf for a long time – especially now for me because I’m getting into reading actual books for the first time. Long time comic book reader.Anyway, something always fascinated me about sharp objects and I have no idea what it was. The ominous cover, my existing adoration for Flynn, it being a crime murder mystery – which is my preferred genre for pretty much anything. I bought the book and immediately started reading it and now I think I need a hug.Gillian Flynn’s writing to me was borderline perfect out of what I want from a novel of this genre. It isn’t overwhelmingly descriptive, has realistic characters and dialogue and contains some disturbing material within. Just in the first few pages, there’s an underlying sense of dread. I was immediately hooked. Early on, I thought I had it all figured out – her mother killed the children. But by the epilogue, all my expectations were thrown out the window and I can’t get over both how fucked that ending was and how I didn’t see it coming whatsoever.Maybe that’s just from me being new to this medium or it was genuinely a great twist. I’m gonna go with the latter on this one. Amma being the killer made a whole lot of sense and didn’t take away from anything. In fact, it makes me want to read this book over again and look for any hidden details I missed that alluded to this. I know some remarks Amma made strike out as obvious (Her calling John Keene “babykiller” many times throughout raises some eyebrows now I’m hindsight) but I just didn’t see it coming and I was – as odd as this sounds given the subject matter – pleased with the outcome. In terms of writing, I mean. I think it’s a twist done right and I really fucking enjoyed this book.The character of Camille was great and all throughout I wanted to give her a hug. The vile mother acting as the scapegoat was brilliant. Everything felt unique. From the murder itself to the Midwest setting that resonated with me. Small town murders are nothing new, but the execution felt fresh to me. Wing Gap felt kind of like purgatory at times and I think that had to be intentional.This has been overly long, so I’ll end it here. Much to the bewilderment of other visually impaired people, I love to collect hardcovers of my favorite books. Something about being surrounded by the tangible evidence of the stories I love so much is beautiful and intoxicating, regardless of if I can read them that way.I bought a signed copy of The Black Prism by Brent Weeks, and in the additional notes, I happened to mention that I’m blind. Reading has always been a reliably accessible interest.His response was to not only sign my copy in print, but look into and successfully find a way to get the quote and signature in Braille.I am blown away by and incredibly grateful for the thoughtfullness of a gesture that he did not need to make. I value the concept of the signed books I have, but I never imagined I’d be able to open one and truly experience it in the same way as sighted readers do.I am so proud and grateful to be a reader. Just the other day I go to Harvey’s and order a burger and a cup of water. The cashier lady gives me a cup and I assume I can just fill it at the fountain. The fountain however had no water tap so I asked her to fill it up at her sink. She offered me to just fill it up with soda and was kind of surprised that I wasn’t just trying to save a buck. This reminded me of a time a couple of months ago where I asked if they had any deals for two combos, and employee went along with the order but kept mentioning that I had a coupon. I kept telling him that I didn’t have a coupon and didn’t realize that he was trying to save me some bucks. Harvey’s employees are real asf. Context: I got a job recently and was asked to embed with another in-house team for a few weeks until my team came back from vacation/parental leave. There isn’t another dedicated frontend engineer on this team but several generalist engineers with limited front end experience. One engineer in particular who seems relatively junior (full disclosure, I have ~6 YOE), works primarily on front end.When I joined the team, I noticed a number of issues throughout the codebase but no serious showstoppers. During code review (and via some git blame investigations), I noticed the majority of these problems came from this junior engineer, so I paid a bit closer attention to their PRs when doing code review. As a general rule, I try to keep my review comments concise and focused on the code, not the person and try to add positive comments as well when I think something was designed or implemented well.I noticed this dev had a habit of “running out the clock” on their work. They would ship something within a reasonable timeframe and move onto the next ticket before getting approval on the first ticket. Then they would apply pressure in stand up to just “ship it” since “it works fine.” Often, I had to just approve things to get it out the door. Previously, the other engineers would just rubber stamp all front end PRs.Examples of critique (tweaked to omit details)”This internal component is redefined on each render. Doesn’t look like it has any dependencies on the outer scope so it can moved out entirely.””Add a role and aria label for these icons so they can be read by screen readers””This test contains a lot of implementation detail. It’s a lot simpler to assert that the button text matches what we expect when the number of the items in the cart is greater than 10. Otherwise, this test will break whenever we refactor unrelated logic.
