I’m looking to retire in 10 years. I’m not neccesarily opposed to working part time, possibly remotely in the winter time, but I would rather like to plan as though I do not have to actively work while being somewhere south in the winter months. What advice would someone who does not work have for someone like me? Are you living off savings, off of various investments? Do you perhaps own rental property where you rent in the summer and live in it during the winter? How would you suggest I steer my ship for the next 10 years to hold my own and perhaps take advantage of different options? via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3BpCGSO

It got positive engagement before someone removed it. And, considering that the content held valid discussion points regarding housing, removing the post kind of feels like censorship. Why did the moderators of this subreddit remove an interview I linked to an journalist (Sam Cooper) that reported on on how housing and money laundering are connected?

A videogame development company (Eidos) in Mtl has transitioned from a 5 days job/week to 4 days. I just wanted to know what are your opinions on it. Also, Would you do it and would 32 hours still be enough for you to live your actual life? (Idk if it’d make a huge difference tax-wise) via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3FpsxrE

I’m not giving up. But I also don’t want to keep chasing an unrealistic goal. After 11 years working our fucking asses off in Ontario both me and my wife make around 100k before tax now. We live very frugally and we saved a lot, we have a little kid and I wanted to secure a nest for my family but it seems that I will always be a tenant. I’m not really sure if being immigrants or middle eastern affects our incomes but both me and my wife are in great positions in our jobs (I’m a manager, she is a team lead for a CS department) but I keep seeing some people on Reddit marking way more than what we do (we are highly skilled and have great language that was never a barrier) we are also constantly praised by our employers but we rarely get a raise and when we do it barely keeps up with inflation. We saved a lot of money but every time I save X houses go up 7X. Few month ago I could’ve tried to buy a house after dumping all my savings and being in debt to my eye balls, I didn’t want that, I don’t want to live off of credit cards and lines of credit. But now !!!!!!In the past few months houses went up by 100s of thousands. That doesn’t make any fucking sense. Some people made made 4-6x my entire household income tax free just by buying a fucking home 2 hours away from Toronto, don’t get me wrong I love Toronto but it’s not Fucking Monaco. At this point I’m really concerned how would I raise my kid. How can I have a safety net for her. I have some money saved in cash and some in stocks and such (nothing much by today’s standards) but I’m really not sure how to move forwards and what to aim for. All I know is that I have to make my peace with the fact that I will never own a home for my family here. And yes we did try to find jobs elsewhere in Canada but again being immigrants might be stopping us from securing that (I don’t know)I don’t know why I’m posting this. Maybe just venting out. But please no stupid comments if you have something to say please be decent I can’t handle anymore demeaning comments it’s enough that we don’t have any sense of dignity as hard working, law abiding, tax paying Canadians via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/3uZjcSt

For example, a lot of my aunts, uncles, and cousins got together last weekend to watch a college football game, and I was made aware that they would be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs, so, of course, I just brought some gardein crispy tenders so I wouldn’t only have to eat side dishes. While I was waiting for the oven to preheat, SO many of my family members questioned why I wasn’t eating hotdogs or hamburgers and were just astounded when I informed them that as of about a month ago I stopped eating meat. After seeing the looks on their faces, I just really felt embarrassed and didn’t want to be asked anymore questions even though I know deep inside that I am proud of what I’m accomplishing. So I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else has felt this way and what exactly I can say to friends and family who judge my decision without sounding defensive. For reference, I am a young, reserved girl living in the Deep South. Thank y’all 🙂 via /r/vegetarian https://ift.tt/3iNY90t

Latest episode (170) looks at the research from a non-financial perspective:For decades, owning a home has been seen as a hallmark of the ‘American dream’ and a major life milestone. While we take it for granted that home ownership is good, we make the argument in today’s episode that, from the perspective of subjective well-being, owning a home isn’t necessarily the key to happiness. This conversation covers the non-financial aspects of homeownership and why owning a home isn’t necessarily superior to renting one. This is supported by data from a number of different studies that describe the relationship between experienced happiness and life evaluation, and how the decision to buy or rent relates to effective forecasting, for example. Benjamin unpacks concepts like focalism, hedonic adaptation, and buyer’s remorse, as well as social comparison and happiness when it comes to material purchases like homes. He concludes with the following words of wisdom: buying a house will not make you happy, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad decision.
