Partner and I bought a house earlier this year, yay! Unfortunately due to a lack of familial wealth on either side, there’s no option to run to the Bank of Mom and Dad if anything goes south. With that in mind, we purposely bought a house that cost less than what we were approved for. The house itself seemed to be solid, and a home inspection turned up nothing of note. Our paychecks currently alternate being used to restock our RRSPs and contribute to our “house fund” i.e. bills, property taxes, tools etc. Our emergency fund, previously thought of as the “emergency cat fund”, has been untouched. Life looked good. We were homeowners now! We can fix our own stuff instead of getting ignored by our landlord!Cut to today, less than two months after taking possession of our new house. Water is flooding into my office from a recessed light in the ceiling. No visible leaks or flooding in the bathroom above, which means there’s probably a leak somewhere between the floor of the bathroom and the ceiling of my office. The bathroom and my office are both cordoned off, electricity to the office has been cut and a plumber has been called. This absolutely sucks, and as painful as it is to have to fork over the money for the house so soon after forking over the down payment and all those closing costs on this house, we’re glad we didn’t go for the more expensive, “we-can-kind-of-afford-this-on-paper” houses because then we truly would have been underwater.ETA: thank you for everyone mentioning home insurance! My partner handles those bills and neither of us had thought of it, but it turns out we should be covered. We’ll see if it’s worth going through insurance bc currently there’s no visible damage on the ceiling and thankfully it didn’t leak onto my shelves and electronics. But it looks like the cats might get to keep their emergency fund this time 🙂 via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3DV6mYW

Basically the provincial government needs to override city hall and allow 3-unit buildings, up to three storeys, anywhere in Ontario. I don’t care about your neighbourhood’s so-called “character” if it means there is a generation of people that are homeless or slaving away for descent shelter, which should be a human right like medical care.Toronto’s leaders and planners has proven time and time again that they are inept and do not have renter’s interest at heart. It’s a little known fact that older apartment buildings pay 3x the property tax rate than a brand new condo. That’s injustice to renters who are paying that higher tax rate indirectly. This is something entirely within Toronto’s purview to fix, but they just don’t give a damn.I’m no fan of Doug Ford, but he has done more on the housing front than any recent Premier or Mayor of Toronto. The yellowbelt needs to go. via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/3neIOY7

my motorcycle (Yamaha R6) was stolen on Wednesday Oct 6 from my condo underground parking. Police was called and i filed a report. We found the CCTV footage of a white dodge minivan with 2 guys stealing my motorcycle. ‘ Cops never bothered to contact us about any interest in obtaining the footage. The cop on site just told me you wont get it back, dont hold up any hope and how this is a professional gang doing this all over GTA.That same day i called TD and opened a claim – they told me my adjuster will call me in 24 hrs …. that was 2 weeks ago. When i called the adjuster’s phone – it turned out she was on a long vacation.I tried calling TD back and i got a hold of the manager’s name – but he does not respond back to my voicemail or emails. It turns out that the assigned adjuster was finally back from vacation and she called me from a no caller ID number and she did not identify herself and left a VM that TD is just looking into this claim and they need more time. She did not leave her name or phone number in the VM which was weird.I quickly sent her an email saying pls call me back. She called me back and started screaming at me and she said she’s been working long hours and that she is busy and how she didnt have time for me and how i should be grateful to have access to her.I said you are being very rude and you are very late, you having to work late is not my problem – so then she hung up on me. I can’t believe the unprofessionalism from this adjuster working for TD insurance. i think upon her return from vacation – she was overwhelmed with the number of cases she had to follow up on and so she took it out on me.I have no idea what is happening with my claim and every-time i call TD its a 1-hr wait time..they just take notes and tell me someone is going to call me in 24hrs – they never do!….I’ve been calling everyday wasting 1 hr of my time to get through to TD insurance phone lines and they always say they can only take notes down and pass it to the manager who never responds back to my emails or VM.I am so frustrated.TDLR: my bike got stolen, TD adjuster assigned to my claim is a POS and now i’m stuck via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3G12WFX

https://globalnews.ca/news/8277723/ontario-ndp-bill-capping-rent-increases-tenants/”The Rent Stabilization Act: Pay What the Last Tenant Paid was unveiled in a series of news conferences from NDP MPPs in London, Ottawa and Toronto.During an announcement near Western University, London North Centre MPP Terence Kernaghan said if passed, the proposed legislation would ensure that when a new tenant moves into an apartment, they’ll be charged the same rent as the previous tenant. The only price hikes allowed would be ones tied to government-regulated increases that are based on annual inflation.“One of the most common stories I hear from renters is that when they move out, their apartment goes back on the market, costing anywhere from 200 to 400 more dollars,” Kernaghan said.“The new rent is hundreds of dollars more, despite the fact that there hasn’t been a single upgrade or improvement.”The MPP added that Ontario has seen an uptick in “renovictions,” which he describes as a practice where “landlords will evict their current tenants, make some upgrades to the unit and then charge exponentially more rent.”“A good tenant shouldn’t lose their home because of this and this bill would remove that profit incentive for landlords and keep reliable tenants housed,” Kernaghan said.In 2018, the Ontario government introduced legislation that scrapped rent control on new builds that are occupied for the first time after Nov. 15, 2018.Apartments that do fall under rent control have to follow Ontario’s rent increase guideline, which is capped at 1.2 per cent for 2022.The province enacted a rent freeze for 2021 that is set to expire at the end of the year, but advocates are pushing for an extension as the COVID-19 pandemic wears on.” via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/2Z9TDlO

You are a wonderful person.Last week I saw you give a homeless man at Yonge and College a $50 bill (it might have been two bills? I couldn’t tell). It was such a beautiful act of kindness, that I know it had a huge impact on him. I saw how shocked he was and heard him say “I don’t know what to do with this!” and then “…I can buy a radio with this money!”I saw him today, and he had a small radio, playing some music softly.Seeing the amount of homeless, addicted, and mentally ill people in Toronto on a daily basis, you become desensitized to the problem. I am glad I saw you treat him like a worthy human being. I need to do the same. via /r/toronto https://ift.tt/3lXjPJC

Traditionally I’ve found wage data to be pretty terrible. One site the average wage for a basket weaver is 100K, another says it’s 200K. They’re based on submissions or surveys etc. But I recently found gold-standard data sources for the US and Canada. For the US it’s the Bureau of Labour Statistics. For Canada it’s the job-bank the feds maintain. Anyway, both these sources have data by metro-area so I’ve decided to compare. And what I decided to compare is Buffalo and Toronto, a short 100-min drive down the QEW. Anyway, across the board most private sector careers pay more in Buffalo. In Toronto the median accountant $35 CAD an hour. A two hour drive away in Buffalo, the median accountant makes $40 CAD/hour (line 13-2011).In Toronto a construction manager makes $41/hour. In Buffalo one makes $56.30 CAD /hour (line 11-9021).Software developer: Toronto is $38.50/hour. Buffalo is $51.85 CAD (15-1256).Is this true in the public sector? Toronto is $45.19/hour. If you look at 25-2031 it’s $75K/year, works out to $44.51/CAD year. Interesting! What about a nurse? Toronto is $35/hour. Buffalo is $46 CAD/hour (29-1141). Guess those US medical bills go somewhere.Anyway you get the point. To top it off, Toronto’s average home price is over a million. In Buffalo it’s $222K CAD.So errrrr wtf? I know “you have to live in Buffalo then bruh”. But if enough priced-out young people did the move it would turn desirable pretty quick. via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/3lWjsPo

Original post found here, but removed. Post text was as follows:My family poops big. Maybe it’s genetic, maybe it’s our diet, but everyone births giant logs of crap. If anyone has laid a mega-poop, you know that sometimes it won’t flush. It lays across the hole in the bottom of the bowl and the vortex of draining water merely gives it a spin as it mocks you. Growing up, this was a common enough occurrence that our family had a poop knife. It was an old rusty kitchen knife that hung on a nail in the laundry room, only to be used for that purpose. It was normal to walk through the hallway and have someone call out “hey, can you get me the poop knife”? I thought it was standard kit. You have your plunger, your toilet brush, and your poop knife. Fast forward to 22. It’s been a day or two between poops and I’m over at my friend’s house. My friend was the local dealer and always had ‘guests’ over, because you can’t buy weed without sitting on your ass and sampling it for an hour. I excuse myself and lay a gigantic turd. I look down and see that it’s a sideways one, so I crack the door and call out for my friend. He arrives and I ask him for his poop knife. “My what?” Your poop knife, I say. I need to use it. Please. “Wtf is a poop knife?” Obviously he has one, but maybe he calls it by a more delicate name. A fecal cleaver? A Dung divider? A guano glaive? I explain what it is I want and why I want it. He starts giggling. Then laughing. Then lots of people start laughing. It turns out, the music stopped and everyone heard my pleas through the door. It also turns out that none of them had poop knives, it was just my fucked up family with their fucked up bowels. FML. I told this to my wife last night, who was amused and horrified at the same time. It turns out that she did not know what a poop knife was and had been using the old rusty knife hanging in the utility closet as a basic utility knife. Thankfully she didn’t cook with it, but used it to open Amazon boxes. She will be getting her own utility knife now.[Edit: Common question – Why was this not in the bathroom instead of the laundry room? Answer. We only had one poop knife, and the laundry room was central to all three bathrooms. I have no idea why we didn’t have three poop knives. All I know is that we didn’t. We had the one. Possibly because my father was notoriously cheap about the weirdest things. So yes, we shared our poop knife.] via /r/MuseumOfReddit https://ift.tt/3gSMJWZ
